Young People's Film Awards - category criteria

The following criteria is a guide and relative to the ages of the children submitting an entry. Make sure that you read the following carefully as the judges will be looking to see if the genre you have chosen contains the main elements as listed below. Films can be either live action or animation.

Year 7 - Superheroes

A superhero film, superhero movie, or superhero motion picture is an action, fantasy or science fiction film that is focused on the actions of one or more superheroes, individuals who usually possess superhuman abilities relative to a normal person and are dedicated to protecting the public.

These films are almost always action-oriented, and the first film of a particular character often includes a focus on the origin of the special powers including the first fight against the character's most famous archenemy or super villain. The plot typically revolves around the efforts of the superheroes to thwart some dire peril of significant consequence.

Year 8/9 - Biopic of a sporting hero

'Biopics' is a term derived from the combination of the words ‘biography’ and ‘pictures.’ These films depict the life of an important historical personage (or group) from the past or present era.

Year 10/11 - Thriller

Thrillers are a genre of literature, film and television programmming that uses suspense, tension and excitement as the main elements. Common subgenres are detective and mystery. Please clearly read the guidelines relating to this film category.

Year 12/13 - Drama

A drama film is a film genre that depends mostly on in-depth development of realistic characters dealing with emotional themes. Dramatic themes such as alcoholism, drug addiction, racial prejudice, religious intolerance, poverty, crime and corruption put the characters in conflict with themselves, others, society and even natural phenomena

This film genre can be contrasted with an action film, which relies on fast-paced action and physical conflict but superficial character development. All film genres can include dramatic elements, but typically, films considered drama films focus mainly on the drama of the main issue.

Documentary - The Olympic Truce 'Celebrating sport to build peaceful cultures' 

A documentary asks a question on a particular topic of interest and attempts to answer it by outlining conclusions and possible solutions by the end of the film.

Documentaries should:

  • Clearly state the issue - think about a question you want answered
  • Show the cause of the issue
  • State the consequences of the issue
  • Discuss a possible resolution

This year’s documentary category is focused on London Olympics and the Olympic Truce which encompasses unity, peace, sporting chances, belief, achievement and spirit of sportsmanship.

Film tip: When interviewing someone, choose questions that cannot easily be answered with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to give the interviewee the chance to express their views and opinions on the topic.

Key stage three animation - fantasy

Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement. It is an optical illusion of motion duethe phenomenon of persistence of vision, and can be created and demonstrated in a numbeof ways. ‘Stop – frame’ animation is popular as is Adobe Flash software – a combination of both is possible, CGI animation is accepted.

Fantasy is a genre that uses magic and other supernatural phenomena as a primary element of plot, theme, and/or setting. Many works within the genre take place in fictional worlds where magic is common. Fantasy is generally distinguished from science fiction in that it not provide a logical (or pseudo logical) explanation for the scientifically impossible events that occur, though there is a great deal of overlap between the two (both are subgenres of speculative fiction).

Key stage four/five animation - disaster

A disaster film is a film genre that has an impending or ongoing disaster (such as a damaged airliner, fire, shipwreck, an asteroid collision or natural calamities) as its subject. These films typically feature large casts of well-known actors and multiple plotlines, focusing on the characters' attempts to avert, escape or cope with the disaster and its aftermath. Best pop music video

This should be a short film that accompanies a complete piece of music/song. Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation, live action filming, documentaries and non-narrative approaches such as abstract film. Some music videos blend different styles, such as animation and live action. Many music videos do not interpreimages from the song's lyrics, making it less literal than expected.

A film based on one of the available drama or documentary categories i.e. 'drama' with the primary use of a foreign language and/or sign language throughout. The film should still fulfill each of the criteria specific to the chosen genre and should also include subtitles in English.
