Help tomorrow take shape
Every ten years the Office for National Statistics (ONS) carries
out a census to find out more about the people who live in England
and Wales and about the make-up of local neighbourhoods. The next
census will take place on Sunday 27 March 2011, when ONS will be
sending out questionnaires for around 25 million households to
complete.
The census asks about work, health, national identity,
citizenship, ethnic background, education, second homes, language,
religion, marital status and so on. These statistics are then used
to build a picture of today’s society.
Why should this matter?
Like all local authorities in England and Wales, Peterborough
City Council relies on census population statistics to receive the
government funding it needs for public services. How much we
receive is directly related to how many and what kind of people the
census says live in our area.
So even if the census ended up just a few households short, it
could make a very real difference to people’s lives. The census
needs to include everyone, everywhere – and that’s why everyone has
to take part.
What do residents need to do?
Simple. Just answer a few questions about
themselves and the people who share their household with them on
census day. Everything people tell the census is in strictest
confidence and will be used only to produce statistics. ONS will
not share people’s personal information with any other government
department or organisation.

Census questionnaires can be completed
online. Forms can also be returned by post. However, everyone
must do it. So we want people to complete and return their
questionnaires as soon as possible after census day.
The census needs everyone to take part in
helping tomorrow take shape – and this is your chance to make a
difference.
The following frequently
asked questions about the 2011 Census provides further
informaton about how to complete the census and why it is
important.
Census jobs
Organisers of the 2011 Census are still inviting
applications from local people for temporary part-time work as
census collectors. In particular, census collectors are
needed for the following districts in the Peterborough area:
- Eye Green, Newborough and Thorney
- Eastgate, Fengate and South Peterborough
- Deeping Gate, Northborough, Marholm, Southorpe and Upton
Census collectors will be responsible for contacting
householders to follow up on the non-return of completed census
questionnaires. They will be expected to work from six to eight
weeks between 21 March and 6 May at a pay scale of between £7.41
and £10.42 per hour (depending on location). Applications can be
made via the censusjobs website: https://censusjobs.co.uk.
