What is twinning?
Twinning started in Europe after 1945 and the end of the Second
World War. Its purpose was to promote friendship and greater
understanding between the people of different European towns,
with the aim of reducing conflict in the future.
A twinning link is a formal, long-term friendship involving
co-operation between two communities in different countries. This
is detailed in a written agreement signed by both local
authorities. The two communities organise projects and
activities around different themes which help develop an
understanding of historical, cultural, lifestyle similarities and
differences. These activities involve a wide range of
community groups and people to people contact.
