Viersen Germany

Peterborough twinned with Viersen in 1982.  Viersen is a young town founded in 1970 as part of communal restructuring.  The towns of Viersen, Dülken and Süchteln and the community of Boisheim merged to form the new town of Viersen.

Geography

Viersen is a very ‘green’ town, situated on the edge of the Maas-Schwalm-Nette nature reserve.  There are also large wooded areas around the town.  The network of parks and public gardens is well spread across the various districts.  The area resembles the fens to the East of Peterborough.

Culture

The focal point of cultural life is the Festhalle with its outstanding acoustic qualities. Symphonic concerts play a key part in the cultural life of the town as well as the International Jazz festival that takes place each year.  Viersen also plays host to many national events.  In recent years the World Billiard Championship has taken place in the Festhalle.   The Städtische Galerie in the Park draws art lovers from all regions.  The gallery offers a variety of exhibitions, guided tours, lectures and meetings with artists.
