Street leaders

The street leader scheme was launched in Peterborough as a pilot in July 2008. We currently have over 145 street leaders from right across the City operating in both urban and rural areas.

What is the street leader scheme?

The Street Leader scheme is designed to support people who are concerned about their local environment and want to work in partnership with Peterborough City Council to make noticeable improvements.

Who can be a street leader?

Street leaders can be anyone living in the Peterborough area who is willing to look out for problems in their communities. The scheme is also open to any business or organisations that have a collective interest in helping make a difference in the community.

How much time do street leaders give up?

Street leaders don't have to give up a set amount of time and your role as a Street leader can become part of your every day life. All you have to do is keep your eyes open for anything that has a negative effect on your local environment and report it to us.

How do street leaders report problems?

Street leaders report problems direct to the Council by phoning the dedicated free phone number or via the website using the on line reporting form.

How big an area are street leaders expected to keep an eye on?

This depends on how active you want to be. You could choose to look after the street you live in, the places where you regularly travel through on your way to work, school, the shops or while walking your dog. You can report anything you see in Peterborough that you feel effects your overall environment.

How will becoming a street leader help my community?

By becoming a Street leader you will be able to help improve your neighbourhoods street scene by reporting problems such as

  • Graffiti
  • Fly tipping
  • Litter
  • Dog Fouling
  • Abandoned vehicles
  • Defective Street Lighting
  • Any other problem that is causing concerns to the local community.

Do Street leaders get any training?

Yes, new street leaders will receive an induction into the scheme, will learn how to recognise different types of environment crime and how to report it. You will also be given the opportunity to take part in activities such as providing information to residents about various services and schemes provided by the Council and other local agencies and groups for their overall benefit.
