Licensing of premises for marriage or civil partnerships

To hold a civil ceremony or marriage at premises in England or Wales, the premise must be approved by the local authority. You must be the proprietor or a trustee of the premises to apply for permission to hold civil ceremonies or weddings.

Eligibility criteria

The application must be in writing (including by electronic means) and include:

  •  the name and address of the applicant
  •  such other information as Peterborough City Council requires
  •  four copies of the plans of the premises which clearly identify the room or rooms in which the proceedings will occur.

Fees

The fees for an approved premises license are:

  • Up to 31 March 2013:  £1800 plus the cost of a notice fee of £100 is payable
  • 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2014:  £2000 (proposed) plus the cost of a notice fee of £100 is payable

 

Regulation summary

Your premises will be inspected. Your application and plan will be made available to the public for inspection and public notice of the application put in the local newspaper as part of a public consultation process.

Application evaluation process

To be granted your application must be in the correct format  and your premises deemed suitable. However, your application may still be refused if it is felt that there are too many approved premises in the area for the registrars to attend. Conditions may be imposed to your approval. The Registrar General may issue guidance to Peterborough City Council to assist them in making their decision.

Will tacit consent apply?

No. The authority must process your application before it can be granted. If you have not heard from Peterborough City Council within 6 months then please contact the Business Support Officer to Head of Customer Services:

Failed application redress 

Please contact Peterborough City Council in the first instance. You have the right to seek a review of refusal to grant your application. You must deliver your request for review to the Business Support Officer at Peterborough City Council (contact details above), accompanied by any requested fee.

Licence holder redress

Please contact Peterborough City Council in the first instance. Your have the right to seek a review of the imposition of conditions, refusal to renew or revocation of approval. You must deliver your request for review to the Business Support Officer at Peterborough CIty Council (contact details above), accompanied by any requested fee.

Customer complaint

We would always advise that in the event of a complaint, the first contact is made with the trader by you - preferably in the form of a letter (with proof of delivery). If that has not worked and you are located in the UK, Consumer Direct will give you advice. IF you are located outside the UK, contact the UK European Consumer Centre. 

Other redress

If you object to an application for premises approval, you may give notice to Peterborough City Council within 21 days of the notice of application appearing in the local newspaper.
