The Mayor
Peterborough City Council elects a Mayor to serve for
one year. Councillor Keith Sharp was elected on 17
May 2010. The Mayoral year is always busy and the Mayor will
attend many functions including formal civic events and the annual
meeting of the Council. At the beginning of the
year the Mayor will nominate charities who will receive the
proceeds from the fundraising undertaken during the year. The Mayor
receives many invitations to events and functions throughout the
year and so many of these are attended by the Deputy
Mayor when the Mayor is booked elsewhere.
Councillor Keith Sharp was elected Mayor for the year at a Full Council Meeting held on 17 May 2010.
Councillor Bella Saltmarsh was elected Deputy Mayor for the year at a Full Council Meeting held on 17 May 2010.
This year the Mayor is supporting Diabetes UK – Peterborough Voluntary Support Group, Macmillan Cancer Support and fund raising for the Peterborough War Memorial.
Although the powers of mayor have diminished over the years the role has retained its importance.
The word 'Mayor' derives from the French 'Maire' which in turn probably originated from the Latin 'Major' meaning the greater or superior.
There is no shortage of former mayors currently sitting in the council chamber.
Invite the Mayor of Peterborough to attend, open, speak or make a presentation at an event.
Guidance for the organisers if the Mayor is attending your function.
