Declaration of Election Expenses

The Representation of the People Act 1983 (as amended) imposes limits on candidates’ spending during the election campaign. All candidates and their Election Agents who stand at elections for either local government or national elections are required to submit a return and declaration of their expenses to the Returning Officer.

The Returning Officer must give public notice in respect of Parliamentary and European Parliamentary Elections of the availability of each set of returns and declarations for inspection. These documents are also available for inspection for Local Government Elections but there is no requirement for public notice to be given.

The Returning Officer has to keep these items and make them available for inspection for the following length of time:

  • Parliamentary Elections - for 2 years
  • European Parliamentary Elections - for 12 months at the office of the Regional Returning Officer (Huntingdonshire District Council)
  • City Council Elections - for 2 years
  • Parish Council Elections for 12 months

The Parliamentary and local candidate election expenses from the elections held on 6 May 2010 are available for inspection by appointment between the hours of 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday (excluding bank and public holidays) at the Town Hall, Bridge Street, Peterborough, PE1 1GF.

Please call 01733 452349 or e-mail electoralservices@peterborough.gov.uk for an appointment.

Copies of the documents are available at a charge of 20p per single sided page.
