The electoral register

Everyone must register as an elector in the area in which they live.

Personal registration forms

Most people who wish to register will use the personal registration form. This form should be used when a person moves from one property to another or if the person has a change of circumstances, for example a change of name by marriage. Please complete the Personal Registration form and return it to Electoral Services. If you have difficulty completing the form please refer to the guidance notes

You can register to vote if you are:

  • 16 or over (but you cannot vote until you are 18)
  • a UK, Republic of Ireland or Commonwealth citizen
  • a citizen of a European Union country and you are living in the UK
  • a citizen of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or a British Overseas Territory and you are living in the UK

Special forms

Certain other groups of electors are required to use special forms. All of these forms are listed below. To enable you to select the correct form, a short description of the form and the groups of people for whom it is intended has been provided.

All citizens of the Member States of the European Union who are normally resident in the United Kingdom must register as electors. That "first" registration permits these electors to vote in City Council and Parish Council Elections. Applications to amend opt-In or opt-out details on the register of electors.

An elector may opt to have their name and address excluded from the "Edited Register" (the public version of the Register). This "opting out" is normally done at the time of the annual household registration in September, however this form may be used by any elector to opt-in or opt-out again at any point throughout the year.
