Postal votes
Voting by post is an easy and convenient way of voting if you
are unable to get to the polling station. In order to vote by post
you will need to fill in an application form which clearly states
your signature and date of birth. The form must then be returned to
the Electoral Services Department for processing.
The main points to consider before applying for a postal vote
are:
- You must be on the electoral register in order to apply for a
postal vote
- Anyone over the age of 18 can apply for a postal vote
- A postal vote can be sent to your home address or any other
address that you specify
- Postal votes can be sent overseas, but you will need to
consider whether there will be enough time to receive and return
your ballot paper by election day
- Postal votes are usually sent out about a week before
election day
- Postal votes must be returned by close of poll, which is
10.00pm on election day. If they are returned later than this
they will not be counted
If you apply for a postal vote it is important to remember the
following:
- When you receive your postal vote, it must be kept in a safe
place and handled only by you
- Complete your postal vote in private and do not let anyone else
see it
- Do not let anyone else vote for you
- Do not give your ballot paper to anyone else
- Seal all envelopes yourself
- If possible take your postal vote to the post box yourself, if
this is not possible give it to someone you know and trust to post
it for you
- Rememeber it is your vote so if anybody tries to help you
against your will or force you to give them your postal vote,
you should contact the police.
