Review of polling places published

20 December 2011

The conclusions of a review into Peterboroughs polling districts and polling places were discussed by councilors at a meeting of Full Council on Wednesday 7 December 2011.

Various stakeholders were asked to comment on polling districts and polling places to ensure that electors have suitable facilities to vote on election days. The review took into account whether facilities are suitable and can be accessed by disabled people and whether polling places are in the most suitable locations.

A polling district is the geographical area created by the sub-division of a constituency, ward or division into smaller parts. A polling place is the building or area in which polling stations will be selected and a polling station is the room or area within the polling place where voting takes place.

Peterborough City Council has 91 polling stations and each venue was visited as part of the review. The location, size, transport links and suitability of each venue were taken into account.

Twelve representations were made during the consultation period. These comments were taken into account when considering if any changes should be made.

Council concluded that there should be no changes to polling districts. Four changes have been made to the list of polling places as follows:

·      Eyrescroft Primary School to be replaced by The Cresset, Rightwell, Bretton, due to less suitable facilities at the previous venue.

·      St Barnabas Centre on Taverners Road to be replaced by Gladstone Park Community Centre on Bourges Boulevard as St Barnabas is no longer available for hire.

·      Werrington Sports Centre to be replaced by Ken Stimpson Community School at the Werrington Centre, Staniland Way, as the room at the sports centre was too small.

·      Hampton College to be replaced by Hampton Vale Community Centre on West Lake Avenue as the college is no longer available.
