Our awards and accolades

Over the years we have won awards for many of our services and processes and the last 12 months were no exception with many of our services being recognised for their excellent work at a national level

2011

  • The council’s business transformation programme was named winner of the Crème de la Crème award for outstanding public sector procurement.

2010

  • Our waste and recycling service were winners of the Waste Management award at the Government Business Awards
  • We were named Local Authority of the Year at the inaugural Plant and Waste Recycling Awards
  • The city council’s waste and recycling services team was shortlisted in the environmental innovation in waste management collection achievement of the year category of the Municipal Journal Awards 2010
  • The Demand Management Programme was named winner of the Local Government Procurement Award at the Government Business Awards
  • Our front/back office Manor Drive and Customer Services projects were finalists in the LGC Main Awards Efficiency & Transformational Government category
  • We were 'Commended' in the Government Business Awards Financial Performance and Public Safety Awards
  • The Council has been recognised as Investors In People following a departmental assessment in line with IPP procedures

2009

  • In February 2009, our customer service centre was awarded the Customer Service Excellence (CSE) certificate. The certificate is a central government standard which has replaced the Charter Mark Award that shows, through assessment that a service is delivering excellent customer service.
  • Our waste and recycling team were winners of the Best Performance for Refuse Collection award at the Association of Public Service Excellence (APSE) Performance Awards 2009
  • City Council accountant Kirsty Nutton was shortlisted for Accountant of the Year in the Accountancy Age Awards     
  • The electoral services team  was shortlisted in the Best Local Government Management Team category in the annual public sector Local Government Chronicle awards  
  • The finance team received a highly commended award as runner-up in the national LGC Awards 2009 in the finance team of the year category team
  • Our front/back office Manor Drive and Customer Services projects were winners of the Efficiency Initiative Category in the LGC Finance Awards
  • Our Finance Team were 'Highly Commended' for financial processes and procedures at the LGC Main Awards

2008

  • The Electrical Appliance Recycling Project that reuses, repairs and recycles damaged fridges, washing machines and other white goods that are then sold back into the community was named Electrical and Electronic Recycler of the Year and was also shortlisted for the Best Partnership Project for Recycling at the National Recycling Awards 2008.
  • The Unity Youth Project, which builds friendships between young people from different cultures and different parts of the city, was unanimously voted best community youth initiative in the Sustainable Communities Awards.
  • Our civic magazine, YourPeterborough, was nominated for best civic newspaper by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations local government group awards.
  • We were named Transport Authority of the Year at the UK Bus Awards 2008 and were runner-up in the Infrastructure Award category.
  • We were 'highly commended' at the National Transport Awards 2008 for our improvements to bus services.
  • We were awarded 'Beacon' status for improving accessibility to public transport for people with disabilities and for other vulnerable groups.
  • The national tourism body Visit Britain awarded the museum with its prestigious 'Quality Assured Visitor Attraction' award.
  • Our Car Haven and Northminster toilets scooped five-star honours in the 2008 Loo of the Year Awards.
  • Bushfield Community College was awarded a prestigious national Becta ICT award.
  • Legal services gained the Law Society’s Lexcel Quality Award which recognises high standards of management and customer care.
  • We won the silver gilt award and was voted best city in the region in this year's Anglia in Bloom competition.
  • We were awarded the National Year of Reading's local authority of the month for helping to change the culture of reading in Britain
