New four-day waste and recycling collections benefit the environment

17 November 2009

The environment will benefit when a new rota of four-day collections of household waste and recyclable materials is introduced by Peterborough City Council from Tuesday 24 November 2009.

A complete revision of collection rounds means waste and recycling teams will focus on adjacent neighbourhoods each day rather than moving between districts – saving diesel fuel and reducing carbon emissions.

Mike Heath, the city council’s commercial services director, said:  “Over recent years we have extended collection rounds as necessary to cope with the city’s growth.  The switch to a four-day collection rota allows us to conduct a comprehensive review so that, wherever possible, each day’s collections concentrate on specific areas.  We anticipate this will save fuel and reduce carbon emissions.”

Individual letters notifying all households of their new collection days plus information about changes over the Christmas and New Year weeks will be despatched shortly.  The letters will also contain helpful advice about what should be recycled in green bins.

The new rotas for collections of household waste and recyclable materials are as follows:

Collections will be carried out one day early during both weeks leading up to Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, meaning that teams will be working on bank holiday Monday 28 December 2009.  As usual there will be no collections of ‘brown bin’ organic garden materials after Friday 18 December until they re-commence on Tuesday 19 January 2010.
