Towards 65% Plus
Widespread public consultation, beginning in 2001, has
involved Peterborough residents in choosing the best options for
achieving future recycling and waste disposal targets.
The main priorities that emerged from this extensive
consultation were to:
• reduce pollution as much as possible
• reduce waste for landfilling
• generate electricity from waste
• reduce climate change as much as possible
Based on these priorities, a councillor-led, cross-party Members’
Waste and Recycling Working Group undertook detailed investigations
and made site visits before producing a set of recommendations for
Peterborough’s future recycling and waste disposal needs. These
recommendations were formally adopted in the Waste 2020 strategy by
the full city council in February 2007.
The city council is now implementing this strategy, which includes
investing in facilities that will help residents re-use and recycle
more than 65 per cent of discarded household and garden materials,
as well as providing a long-term, sustainable alternative to
landfill.
