Energy-from-waste

In 2007, the city council's Members' Waste and Recycling Group recommended energy-from-waste (EfW) as the best practical environmental option for treating Peterborough’s residual waste - the materials that can’t be reused or recycled.

EfW is a proven, reliable technology that has been used for many years by some of the most environmentally-aware countries in Europe such as Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany and Austria.  Like Peterborough, these countries also have above average recycling rates.

The small-scale facility proposed for development in the Fengate area of Peterborough will:

  • use modern incineration technology to obtain maximum benefit from residual waste
  • produce renewable energy equivalent to the amount required to power around 4,000 homes annually
  • produce heat for use by local industry
  • enable Peterborough to deal with its own waste locally

The proposed EfW facility will reduce Peterborough’s reliance on landfill by cutting the volume of our rubbish by 95 per cent.

Cracked Earth

Using residual waste to generate heat and power can replace the use of fossil fuels and reduce our impact on climate change.

Energy From Waste facility

Energy-from-waste facilities are common across Europe as a sustainable way of treaing residual waste.
