By continuing to work together, local residents and the city
council can achieve in excess of 65 per cent recycling. The city
council is already committed to providing services to help
residents recycle as much as possible. These include: the
collection and recycling of paper, card, plastic bottles, cans and
glass through the existing green bins; the introduction of separate
collection and treatment of food waste; and the collection of
garden waste for composting.
Investment in new facilities is critical for success and
Peterborough City Council is planning to introduce:
- A new Householders’ Recycling Centre to the south of
Peterborough
- A new, larger materials recycling facility (MRF) in
Fengate
- WEEE Re-use (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) – an
improved electrical appliance recycling programme
- Collection and treatment of household food waste
Of course, even with recycling levels at 65 per cent, there will
still be about one third of our waste that cannot be recycled.
Peterborough City Council plans to use this residual waste in an
energy-from-waste
facility to generate renewable energy.
A new Householders’ Recycling Centre to the south of
Peterborough
A suitable site for an additional Householders’ Recycling Centre
(HRC) in the south of Peterborough is being sought. The new site
will alleviate pressure on the existing HRC while reducing the
‘carbon impact’ of people who currently travel to the Dogsthorpe
centre from the south of the city. This modern facility will be
undercover, more user-friendly and will allow even more recycling
to take place. The council also plans to improve the layout and
facilities at the existing Dogsthorpe site.
A new, larger materials recycling facility (MRF) in
Fengate
Peterborough City Council has purchased an existing 61,200 sq ft
factory unit in Storeys Bar Road and planning permission has been
granted to convert this building into a new MRF. The new facility
will enable the city council to process even more recyclables.
WEEE Re-use (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) - an
improved electrical appliance recycling programme
The city council’s award-winning electrical appliance recycling
programme, WEEE Re-use, repairs electrical goods and works with
local community and charity groups to provide needy families with
refurbished electrical products while also recovering components
for re-use and further recycling. WEEE Re-use will be located in
the new MRF at Fengate.
Collection and treatment of household food waste in an
anaerobic digestion (AD) facility
The councillor-led cross-party Members’ Waste and Recycling
Working Group investigated options for collecting and treating
kitchen food waste, which currently goes into black bins and is
landfilled. It recommended that anaerobic digestion (AD) is the
best treatment option for food waste. The AD process takes place in
sealed oxygen free tanks and uses special microbes which feed on
the food to produce a 'biogas'. This will be used to generate
renewable electricity for up to one thousand city homes. The AD
process will also produce a soil improver for local farms, helping
to close the recycling loop.
Work is now in progress on establishing the best way for food
waste to be collected from households in Peterborough.

Peterborough's MRF has received a £1 million upgrade so that we
can recycle more.

Peterborough added glass to the materials it can recycle in
March 2008.
