Accessible Digital Data ADD

Issues the project seeks to address

Progress in action: The Peterborough storyLocal and regional authorities hold a wealth of information and data and for some, access to large quantities of complex digital information is now relatively easy and has become an indispensible part of many professional staff lives.  But access to high quality, understandable and useful information is still an issue that excludes most members of our communities, including local policy makers, small to medium businesses and citizens, (together referred to as community stakeholders).

Previous and current ICT based projects have focussed upon the technology, access to technology and related policy issues.  Building upon past work and related policy/frameworks, for example, the Digital Local Agenda DLA, Free and/or Open Source Software FOSS, this project will focus upon the accessibility and ease of use of complex digital data by community stakeholders.

Accessible digital dataIn an ever increasingly complex world, citizens at all levels need easy and free access to usable data so as to make informed decisions and participate in the governance of their communities.  This project will address the exclusion suffered by many by addressing the inaccessibility of complex digitally based data, which is often created and stored on computer hardware.  This hardware is either closed or restricted to most citizens and the data is stored in formats such as GIS data sheets, which most citizens find difficult or even impossible to understand.  The project will address relevant policy, legal and technical issues and develop, from the exchange of good practice, strategies and tools to improve access to data for all community stakeholders. These strategies will inform current and future policy and the tools will require no specialist software and use platforms freely accessible to all community stakeholders.
