Historic Environment Record

Peterborough's Historic Environment Record, formerly known as Sites and Monuments Record, is the definitive record of the Bath House Castor 1828known archaeological remains within the boundaries of Peterborough Unitary Authority. It digitally maintains three types of record, monuments of all periods (from finds’ spots to earthworks), events (investigative fieldwork such as excavations or surveys) and sources/archives. The database can be digitally searched at http://her.peterborough.gov.uk/forms/homepage.aspx and is geo-referenced in "Hawkeye", the Peterborough City Council's interactive map. As well as database records, it has physical archives that can be consulted (historic maps, annotated maps, photographs and grey literature reports).

The Historic Environment Record is used internally by the Local Planning Authority; by developers to ascertain the potential impact of proposed developments on the historic environment; by farmers seeking advice on agri-environmental schemes; by students and by members of the general public.

The development of the Historic Environment Record depends upon the co-operation of professional archaeologists, local researchers and enthusiasts, as suppliers of information.
