Article 4 Directions
These pages provide information and advice to owners and
occupiers of properties which are the subject of a planning control
known as an "Article 4 Direction". Under current planning
legislation householders have the right to make alterations to
their property without planning permission. This is called
"Permitted Development".
An Article 4 Direction removes this right, so that
certain types of alterations will require planning
permission. We have issued a number of Article 4
Directions to protect the appearance of properties and the
character of an area.
In deciding which buildings are selected we follow certain criteria.
Nearly all alterations which affect the appearance of the property will need permission.

Certain buildings put at risk by developments in the city are protected by article 4 directions.
