Use of 'Article 4 Directions' in Peterborough

The rapid spread and growth of Peterborough in the late 19th and early 20th centuries can be traced through the distinctive architecture and building styles which are still visible today. In the late 1970's there was strong public interest and concern over the loss of the city's heritage through clearance and unsympathetic alterations to older residential properties

Certain buildings at risk were protected by 'Article 4 Directions'.  Between 1979-1982 some 59 Directions were issued on over 600 Victorian and Edwardian properties. In 1994, further Directions were issued on properties in a number of conservation areas. The Directions are periodically reviewed to make sure that standards are being maintained.
