Works usually affected by the 'Article 4 Direction'

There are a number of common works that would be affected by an Article 4 Direction.

Alterations

  • The addition or removal of porches, dormer windows etc and the removal of architectural details such as foot scrapers and ridge tiles will require permission.
  • Aerials, including satellite antenna, should be positioned on the rear of the property.
  • Where a property has been unsympathetically "modernised" the aim is to return it to its original appearance.

Windows

  • The alteration of certain windows will require permission.
  • UPVC windows are not normally acceptable.
  • Replacement windows in replica and repairs to the original design and materials do not require permission.

Doors

  • The front door is an integral part of the house and should be in keeping with the property.
  • New doors should be a replica of their original design.
  • Fanlights are an important period detail and should be retained.

Roofs

  • Permission is needed to change the type of roof covering.
  • A natural slate roof will normally be required where one already exists.
  • Decorative features such as chimney stacks, pots and ridge tiles should be retained.

Rendering

  • Cement rendering, stone cladding and painting are unlikely to receive permission.
  • Using render or painting facing bricks is normally an irreversible step which is expensive to maintain, blights the appearance and can damage the brick and stone work beneath.

Front gardens

  • The construction of a vehicle hardstanding or the removal or building of a front wall may need permission.
  • We will normally seek the retention of traditional walls, fences and gates.
