Why save energy?
Good for your wallet
- Saving energy ultimately means you are saving money. With the
ever increasing price of fuel and the cost of electricity nearly
doubling since 2002 there has never been a better time to be more
energy efficient
Good for the Environment - Cutting unnecessary wastage or use of
energy reduces your carbon footprint, most carbon dioxide and other
green house gases which are harmful to our planet are released
during energy generation.
How much electricity do you use?
The amount of electricity you consume varies according to the
size of your home, location, house type and the number of
occupants.
The average home in the UK consumes approximately 11.78KWH of
electricity per day.
- Power consumption is gauged by measuring in Watts (W)
- The amount of energy a device uses per hour is known as
(KWH)
E.g.100w light bulb switched on for ten hours would be 100 x 10
= 1,000 watt-hours or 1KWh
How do you read your meter?
To read a digital meter, read the numbers on screen. It will
look like this:

Read the numbers from left to right including any 0's at the
beginning. Ignore any red figures.
We recommend that you keep a log of your electricity use to help
you understand your consumption pattern over time. You can download

up-to-date information on electricity use.
- Analyse your energy consumption
- Identify new areas where consumption has increased by switching
appliances on and off
- Use history mode to look for inconsistencies from day to day or
week to week.
- Implement behavioural changes that will save you energy around
your home and start saving money today!
How do I get an Efergy meter for my home?
You can now loan a monitor free of charge from your
local library for
a period of three weeks. Otherwise why not help get your community
to sign up for a Community Energy Challenge where large
numbers of your community loan meters and try and make as many
energy savings as they can across a two week period.
In June 2010 Peterborough's first Employee Energy Challenge
took place with 60 people frm 17 organisations across
Peterborough.
Due to poular demand another challenge will be running in
DSpetember this year to sign up your organisation to take part
