 Water efficiency

You may wonder why saving water is important as sometimes it appears to rain all the time. Despite having a seemingly wet climate some parts of the UK are currently experiencing water shortages. In the UK we waste approximately one third of the water we use on a daily basis, often letting it go down the plughole or toilet without even being used. We can all do our bit to be more water efficient and reduce the impacts of drought.

Top tips

1.   Where possible collect rainwater in water butts and buckets, and then re-use it in the garden.

3.    Where you do need to water plants do this at dusk so that less water evaporates.

3.   A running tap uses a lot of water so don't waste it unnecessarily. Switch it off when brushing your teeth for example.

4.   Try to reduce the amount of water in your bath or shower for less time. Power showers use a lot more water than other showers.

5.   Wait until you have a full load before washing your clothes or turning on the dishwasher, or use the half-load button on your machine.

6.   If you need to purchase a new water using appliance, check to see how water efficient it is.

7.   Fix dripping taps.

8.   Use a bucket and sponge to clean your car instead of a hosepipe.

9. Think about having a water meter fitted - by measuring how much water you use it is easier to reduce your consumption and you could save money.

10. Report any leaks that you see from mains water pipes by calling Anglian Water on 0800 771881.

Water butts

Your roof collects about 85,000 litres of rain each year which then just runs straight into the sewers. This could fill 450 water butts with free water: you could water your garden, your houseplants, or wash your car for free!

Water butt prices can vary so it is worth shopping around, they can be bought from many garden centres and household stores. Many websites also specialise in water efficiency products.

RECAP in partnership with ourselves has a designated website that not only sells but also gives advice on household water butts and compost bins.

Anglian Water are currently running a competition to win water butts as well as selling them on special offer. Visit their competition website to find out more.

Water hippos

About a quarter of all the clean, drinkable water we use in our homes is flushed down a toilet. If you're in the market for a new loo, consider buying a water efficient toilet or one with a dual flush. If your loo is still as good as new, put a hippo or other simalar device into the cistern to save some water.

Save a flush freddie

Toilet freddies can help you save a litre per flush.
