Conservation area character appraisals

We have 29 conservation areas.  They have been selected because each one has a special character which we would like to preserve or enhance.

We are advised to review our conservation areas periodically to ensure that we have up to date appraisals which define the areas special interest.  We are currently preparing conservation area character appraisals and management plans for all conservation areas.

The purpose of appraisals are to:

  • make sure that the our policies are protecting the character of an area
  • provide a basis for making informed decisions about development that may affect the character of a conservation area
  • identify enhancement opportunities

The appraisals are not intended to be comprehensive and the omission of any particular building, feature or space should not be taken to imply that it is of no interest.

Each character appraisal will:

  • identify the area's special interest and character
  • review the conservation area boundaries
  • review the need for additional planning controls
  • establish a measurable built environment baseline to allow re-survey so that changes over time can be accurately identified, measured and the management plan can be adjusted
  • make recommendations in a management plan to make sure the area's special qualities are kept and enhanced

We will adopt as approved guidance each character appraisal and management plan and they will be a material consideration when making planning decisions and considering other changes affecting the area to make sure that the areas special character and appearance is not harmed.
