Air quality management area (AQMA) (2007)

An air quality management area has been declared due to releases of sulphur dioxide exceeding the air quality objective.  Sulphur dioxide is released during the firing of clay bricks in large "Hoffman Kilns" at the Hanson Building Products Ltd, Kings Dyke and Saxon brickworks in Whittlesey.

Sulphur dioxide can cause irritant effects in humans by stimulating nerves in the lining of the nose, throat and airways of the lungs.  This can cause a reflex cough, irritation, a feeling of chest tightness and may lead to the narrowing of the airways.  The short-term pollution is only likely to affect people with pre-existing respiratory problems.
