Flytipping

The council treats flytipping as a serious offence and will prosecute any person or company caught flytipping.  Flytipping  carries a fine of up to £50,000 (unlimited if taken through the Crown Court) or an offender can be sent to prison or have their vehicle seized.

What is flytipping?

Flytipping is the unlawful disposal of waste and illegal dumping of items such as:

  • general household waste
  • large domestic items (e.g. fridges and mattresses)
  • commercial waste (e.g. builders' rubble, tyres etc)
  • garden refuse
  • litter or refuse accumulation
  • soil

The council is only responsible for clearing flytipped waste from the public highway, council maintained parkland and green space and public alleyways. The council also has the powers to remove flytipped waste from commercial premises, subject to a court order.

What action will be taken?

  • The council takes the following action to stop flytipping:
  • letters and cautions are given
  • prosecutions are initiated and taken through the courts
  • CCTV footage is monitored
  • surveillance exercises take place
  • education is made available

Reporting flytipped waste

You can report flytipped waste online or alternatively by telephoning Peterborough Direct on 01733 747474, you will need to know the exact location and description of items. If you witnessed the flytipping please ensure that you give your own name and address and a member of our enforcement team will make contact with you and take further details. Do not touch the waste as flytipped waste can be dangerous, it may contain syringes, broken glass, asbestoc, toxic chemicals or other hazardous substances.

Where can members of the public legally take domestic rubbish or waste for disposal?

Excess domestic waste can be disposed of at the  household recycling centre or alternatively a  bulky waste collection service can be arranged through the council. For further information about the disposal of commercial waste visit the waste and recycling section.
