High hedges

We can investigate complaints about high hedges that are over two metres tall and consist of two or more trees that are predominantly evergreen or semi-evergreen.

High hedges complaints

The hedge must be adversely affecting the reasonable enjoyment of your property  e.g. putting the house and garden in excessive shade . We can only intervene once you have tried and exhausted all reasonable steps to resolve the matter informally. The "over the garden hedge leaflet" outlines some advice on approaching your neighbour. If you are a hedge owner it provides some good advice on what to consider for your hedge. We are not able to negotiate or mediate on your behalf therefore we recommend that you attempt mediation with your neighbours to achieve a resolution. For assistance with mediation please contact Peterborough Mediation Services.

If you are considering making a complaint to us or you are a hedge owner who has been approached by a neighbour about the height of your hedge refer to "High hedges: complaining to the Council" .  It is a useful guide explaining what happens when we get involved. If you have been unable to resolve a high hedges dispute with your neighbour and would like to make a complaint, please contact us for an application form.  Due to the nature of the investigation there is a £410 service charge which is payable on submission of the application form.
