Litter enforcement

If you drop litter in Peterborough you could face a £75 fine.

Litter free city

We want to achieve a litter-free city, every person and business has a duty of care and responsibility to ensure litter relating to them or their business is disposed of in the correct manner.

Street litter

The city council wants to discourage local people from dropping litter and iencourage them to keep the city environment clean.  If this means fining people then this is something we must do.  We want people to think twice before dropping litter and encourage them to use the numerous bins around the city. The regulations which came into effect on 1 April 2006 as part of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2006 gave us the powers to carry out this process.

Police community support officers and city council enforcement officers and litter wardens are now able to issue a fixed penalty notice of £75 to anyone seen dropping litter on public or private land. The council also have powers under the Environmental Protecton Act to deal with loose litter associated with businesses and the curtilage of their business.

Littering on private land

The council has powers under the Environmental Protection Act to deal with levels of litter allowed to accumulate on private land.

What action does the council take?

All offences for dealing with litter have a fixed penalty notice enforcement action.  If perpetrators do not pay the fine further actions will be taken.
