If you are a Tenant of a Registered Social Landlord
If you live in a house owned by one of the
Registered Social Landlords or if the problems come from an
RSL tenant action may be taken under the terms of the tenancy
agreement. Your local RSL Housing Office will be able to give
you advice on this.
Have you written or spoken to the person causing the noise
problem?
The person causing the problem may respond better to a polite
word or letter from you rather than a visit from a Council
official. More often than not the person causing the problem does
not know that their behaviour is affecting others.
Is the noise one behaviour in many that is affecting you?
If noise created by your neighbour is one
issue in many that affects you, for example if the behaviour of
your neighbour is making you feel harassed, alarmed or distressed
then contact the
Peterborough Anti Social Behaviour Team on 01733 747474.
The Pollution Control team are only able to tackle Noise problems
and if this is not the main issue with your complaint it may not
help you in the long run to contact us. The Anti-Social
Behaviour Team have the ability to investigate the whole scenario
to try and resolve neighbour disputes.
When you should contact the Police about noise
The Police deal with certain types of
neighbour problems such as those involving violence, public
disorder or threatening behaviour. The Police should also be
contacted if the Noise is a one off event but is so loud that it is
affecting you in your own home, i.e. woken from sleep. The Police
can be contacted on 0345 4564564. The Pollution Control team
can only get involved if the frequency of noisy events is common as
we must prove repetitious behaviour.
Other possible solutions for dealing with noise problems
Peterborough Mediation is an independent organisation which
offers a confidential service to resolve neighbour problems.
Trained mediators will listen to both parties. Mediation is most
successful when used at an early stage of a dispute before any
formal enforcement action is taken.
You could also consider using a Solicitor to write a letter
on your behalf to the person causing the problem or to give you
