Process designations

Prescribed processes is split into three categories

Part A permits control activities with a range of environmental impacts, including:

  • emissions to air, land and water
  • energy efficiency
  • waste reduction
  • raw materials consumption
  • noise, vibration and heat
  • accident prevention

Part B permits control activities which cause emissions to air.

Part A(1)

These sites are the largest type of prescribed process sites and include landfill sites and power stations. They have the greatest potential to cause pollution. Part A(1) sites are regulated by the Environment Agency.

Part A(2)

These sites include manufacturers using a significant amount of solvents and operations burning waste oil. They are potentially significant contributors to pollution. Part A(2) sites are regulated by the Local Authority.

Part B

These sites have processes which have a very small potential to cause atmospheric pollution including concrete batching plants, dry cleaners, petrol filling stations and vehicle resprayers. Part B sites are regulated by the Local Authority.

The public register for Part A(1) sites is held at the Environment Agency office at Kingfisher House, Goldhay Way, Orton Goldhay, Peterborough, PE2 5ZR.  The public register for Part A(2) and Part B sites can be viewed at Peterborough City Council.
