Housing Research and Intelligence

To help us develop effective housing and planning policies, the council needs to have a strong understanding of our housing market in and around Peterborough.

The Housing Strategy team commissions various studies into the housing market across the authority and the sub-region. We then use the findings of these studies as evidence when producing policies that affect planning and housing.

Recent studies have looked into the different types of housing that people living across Peterborough need, the effect of our affordable housing requirements on the ability of developers to build housing for sale on the open market, the housing needs of migrant communities, and the migration and employment patterns of people living across the sub-region. The findings of these studies help us to plan for the future housing needs of Peterborough, negotiate with developers with regards to what size and type of housing we would like to see built, and to help us deliver better housing-related services.

One significant recent study is the Strategic Housing Market Assessment. Based on household surveys, this is a study that looks into various aspects of the housing market across Peterborough, Rutland, South Holland and South Kesteven, including;

  • The levels of present and future need for different types of housing
  • The needs of specific groups, such as older persons
  • How future demographic changes will affect the type of housing that Peterborough needs

This study was conducted in 2008, with a partial update completed in August 2010.
