Work Experience in Legal and Democratic Services

The Legal and Democratic Services team at Peterborough City Council operates a work experience programme each year for the following:

  • senior school pupils interested in a career in law or public administration
  • law students intending to qualify as lawyers
  • law degree graduates

Examples of some typical work experience includes:

  • senior school pupils spending time with investigators, lawyers and Democratic Services officers
  • Law Students attending the Magistrates Court to watch trials and undertaking research on the benefit of work placements for Law students
  • Graduates assisting one day a week with a project to produce a work retention schedule and assess the merit of retaining archived files

We can provide work experience which runs according to a timetable of events over a period of one or two weeks or for one or two days a week over a longer period according to your needs.

The work experience programme runs from June to August and January to March.  Applications for each of these periods need to be submitted by 01 May for the summer and 01 November for the winter.

Our aim is to provide experience which the applicant will find useful in assisting them to decide if they would like a career in law or Democratic Services and which provides a real insight into the work of lawyers and Democratic Services officers in the public sector. Because our work experience opportunities aim to provide a quality experience, specifically tailored to different levels of experience, we receive many more applications that we can accommodate.

In order to distinguish those who would gain most from work experience at Peterborough City Council we ask that all applicants submit a maximum 300 word statement about why they are seeking work experience with Peterborough City Council and what they hope to gain from their experience. Law degree graduates should specify which area of law particularly interests them and why.

All applicants should also be prepared to submit a report at the end of their work experience.

Applications need to be submitted to:
Head of Legal Services
Chief Executives Department
Town Hall
Bridge Street
Peterborough
PE1 1HG

The Legal and Democratic Services team cannot accommodate more than two work experience persons at any one time but if your application is accepted we can put you on a waiting list for a placement. Please be aware that applications are always high during school holiday periods.
