Local history

The Local History collection consists of various items collected over many years.

  • Books - some can be borrowed, others are for use in the library only.
  • Maps and plans of old Peterborough.
  • Local newspapers, magazines and newsletters.
  • Engravings, lithographs and photographs.

Newspapers

Most local newspapers and maps are stored on microfilm or fiche. Please ensure you book a film reader before your visit to avoid disappointment.

If you wish to use a microfilm or microfiche reader during your visit please contact us to book a machine.

Local History Magazines

The following magazines have been moved into the Local Studies and Archives Room:

  • Current Archaeology
  • Family Tree Magazine
  • History Today
  • Local Historian
  • Local History Magazine
  • Local History News

These are available on the open shelves and can be browsed whenever the library is open.

Enquiries

Email your local history enquiry to the Local Studies Librarian by using the enquiry form. If you visit in person to do some local history research, it is a good idea to arrange an appointment with the Local Studies Librarian in advance on 01733 864280.

We offer a research service for more detailed enquiries. There may be a charge for this service but you will be notified of this before any work is begun.
