Census returns

An official census has been taken every ten years since 1801 (with the exception of 1941), although individuals' names have only been generally recorded since 1841. Census returns are closed to public inspection for one hundred years, so the most recent census available is for the year 1901. The original census returns are at The National Archives at Kew.

Peterborough Central Library have microfilm copies for:

  • Peterborough and Stamford Registration Districts 1841-1901 (which together cover the Soke of Peterborough area)

As well as microfilm copies for:

  • Oundle Registration District and 1851-1881; 1901
  • Whittlesey Registration District 1861-1871; 1901

We also have the complete 1881 British Census for England and a 5% sample of the 1851 Census on CD-ROM.

All published censuses are now available on-line (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/census). Peterborough Central Library sells vouchers for the 1901 census on-line which can be accessed via the Library's People's Network Computers at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/census.
