Turnpike trusts

Before local authorities became responsible for road maintenance, the improvement and repair of local roads was the responsibility of turnpike trusts (local companies that financed road improvements by collecting tolls for road use).

In relation to Peterborough turnpike trusts, the following records are known to exist:
