War memorials and war graves

The most frequently found war memorials relate to the First and Second World Wars, although occasionally other wars may be mentioned, such as the South African War. Details about individuals on memorials can vary greatly.

Peterborough Central Library holds printed lists of those who died during the First World War from the Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battalion, the Cambridgeshire Regiment, the Bedfordshire Regiment, the Northamptonshire Regiment, and a few others. In the office library are copies of The War Graves of the British Empire, for cemeteries and churchyards in Huntingdonshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Peterborough and Rutland.

Huntingdon Record Office also has the Bedford and Northampton (including Hunts) volume of The National Roll of the Great War 1914-1918, which includes the names of all those who served. Please ask a member of staff if you wish to see this book.

For the Second World War, Peterborough Central Library has copies of The War Dead of the Commonwealth, covering cemeteries and churchyards in Huntingdonshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.

Further information about Peterborians who died in the First and Second World Wars can be found at http://www.pboro-memorial.com/.
