The Vanishing of Katharina Linden, by Helen Grant
Although this
is a young adult book, it's the sort of thing adults will enjoy
too. A spooky thriller. The main character is Pia, a young girl -
she's very real. She doesn't really fit in and her only friend
'StinkStefan' who also doesn't fit in. It's a novel of friendship
as well as a gripping thriller with unexpected dark twists and
turns. An easy but gripping read for teens and adults
alike.

Purge, by Sofi Oksanen
An interesting book set in Estonia. It was a difficult
book to get into but the story was good, if harrowing. It shows the
effects of the fear and suspicion encouraged by the Soviet regime
and how these effects continue to affect families..

The Angel's Game, by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
A really good
story, one that I didn't want to put down. Although set in an
almost mythical 1920s Barcelona, with the weather mirroring events
or the hero's state of mind, the characters were credible and well
rounded. Highly recommended as a gripping and satisfying book.

Drop Dead Beautiful, by Jackie Collins
One of the best
books i've ever read! The book is split into several different
characters' stories linked together. This makes the book so
addictive because you want to read on and find out what happens to
certain characters. Definitely suggest it.

The To-do List, by Mike Gayle
An What
fascinates me about this author is that he writes from a male
perspective, and yet it doesn’t make any difference to the outcome
which is a hilarious and scarily recognisable tale of not really
feeling like you’ve really become a grown-up.
The To-Do-List is actually factual. Mr Gayle
decided the only way to become a fully fledged grown-up is to do
all of those things he has been meaning to do for years but never
got round to doing. Mike starts writing his to-do-list and keeps
writing until it becomes a 1277 job list. After a conversation at
cross purposes his agent thinks he is writing a book about it and
therefore he ends up doing just that.
Some tasks are the kind of things we would all
put on our list such as ‘Defrost frost free freezer’. Others are a
little more out of the ordinary but he still completes them - like
978-983 ‘Drink up all the old duty-free spirits that you’ve bought
over the years because you hate to miss a bargain’. Then there’s
the 24 hour trip across the Atlantic, just too… no I won’t say as
I’m not going to spoil it for you. The book is not a list of ‘to
do’s’ but a brilliant and funny example of someone not entirely
sure how to be a grown up and figuring out all sorts of things
about themselves they hadn’t realised they didn’t know.
Oh and by the way, his tasks can only be
considered completed if his pub club agree.
I defy you to read this book and not start
mentally compiling your own list; I’m starting with ‘Tidy home so
when people visit you no longer need to wear the shroud of
shame’!
