They ranged in size from 2.5 to 14 metres in
length. In the Peterborough area 4 different types have been
discovered:
- Cryptoclidus
- Pachycostasaurus
- Muraenosaurus
- Simolestes
They swam using four flippers or paddles. Some
researchers believe that they may even have been able to drag
themselves onto land, to give birth, as modern seals do. Plesiosaur
teeth are believed to have been too thin and sharp for chewing, but
were ideal for catching belemnites.
