Monarchy, Monks and Martyrs

An unusual way to look at Peterborough's past through three different groups of people.

monarchy tour

Royalty has long had a connection to the city - learn which Kings and Queens visited over the centuries.  Discover what happened when Edward II visited Peterborough with his 'friend' Piers Gaveston and why Charles I was imprisoned here.

Find out what life was like for the remarkable monks of Peterborough Abbey, famed their chronicles and illuminated texts.

What is a martyr?  Someone who dies for their beliefs - religious or otherwise. Be moved by the stories of various martyrs connected with Peterborough, from the murdered Archbishop whose holy relics were housed in Peterborough to Saint Henry Heath, a catholic saint who came from the city; from Edith Cavell, shot for telling the truth about smuggling British soldiers out from behind enemy lines in World War I, to the two Peterborough soldiers killed in the 'troubles' in Northern Ireland.
