Peterborough's Archaeology and Historic Environment

Through our archaeology service we aim to explore, protect, and promote the historic environment of the Peterborough area.  The service is part of a nationwide network of archaeological services within local government.

Archaeological dig

Our chief functions are:

to maintain a comprehensive inventory of Peterborough's archaeological heritage and historic landscape - the Peterborough City Council Historic Environment Record;
to provide advice to planners, developers and archaeological contractors working within the Peterborough area;
to promote Peterborough's heritage by providing advice, walks, talks, publications, exhibitions, events, etc;
to work in partnership with landowners, farmers and environmental agencies to encourage the beneficial management of Peterborough's historic landscape.

Peterborough has had a long history of archaeological investigation. Many finds and excavation archives are held at Peterborough Museum. We have detailed reports of past discoveries, and you can also find information about current investigations in the Peterborough area by contacting us.

If you are a student, private researcher, teacher, prospective developer, land owner, or just someone who wants to know more about Peterborough's ancient past, browse this site, or  contact us.
