'Exploding the myth - the WI revealed'
Far from the traditional image of 'Jam and Jerusalem',
our exhibition explored the real story of the WI and its work.
'Exploding the myth - the WI revealed' looked at the story of this
remarkable organisation, particularly in Peterborough.
The exhibition gave visitors the chance to find out how the
Women's Institute has been helping change the lives of women for
nearly 100 years, through education, campaigning and friendship.
Objects on display brought back memories and included a recreated
1940s kitchen. As well as the more familiar domestic side of the
WI, the displays told the story of how the organisation began
campaigning on a variety of health, recycling, work and food
issues.
There were some elements from a national touring display, but
the exhibition was largely put together by the Huntingdon and
Peterborough Federation of the Women's Institute in association
with the museum. The exhibition was also supported by funding from
the 'Awards for All' scheme of the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Many of Peterborough’s most popular cultural and sporting
facilities are part of Vivacity, an independent,
not-for-profit organisation with charitable status.
