The Museum Society
The Museum Society was founded in 1871 as the
Peterborough Natural History Society and Field Club. Within a
decade it had widened its interest and laid down the foundation of
a museum and library. It became the Natural History, Scientific and
Archaeological Society and in 1947 took its modern title of Museum
Society.
In 1968 the museum, housed in the Priestgate building, was
presented to the City of Peterborough. The Museum Society still
meets there on alternate Tuesdays during the winter for lectures covering its wide interests,
including local history, archaeology, conservation, natural
history, literature and fine arts. The Museum Society also has a
number of publications available on the history of
the area.
Talks have relocated to John Clare Theatre on
Broadway.
Many of Peterborough’s most popular cultural and sporting
facilities are part of Vivacity, an independent,
not-for-profit organisation with charitable status.
