Bus passengers warned that some services are being diverted on Saturday 11 December

8 December 2010

Bus passengers are being urged to plan their journeys on Saturday 11 December 2010 as some routes are being diverted from 12noon because of temporary road closures.

The English Defence League (EDL) intends to start its march at 1pm close to Peterborough United's London Road ground and proceed over Town Bridge, past Bridge Street Police Station and then congregate on Lower Bridge Street, opposite Peterborough Magistrates’ Court. London Road and Town Bridge will be closed to traffic while the protest takes place.

Peterborough Trades Union Council (TUC) will start its march at 12noon at Bishop's Road car park, proceed along Rivergate and congregate at the Key Theatre car park. Rivergate, Bishop's Road and the eastbound carriageway of Bourges Boulevard, from Queensgate to Rivergate, will be closed to traffic while the protest takes place.

Several bus routes are also being diverted because of the temporary road closures and the bus stops near the Rivergate Centre and next to the former Woolworths store will be out of operation from 12noon while the protests take place. Notices are being displayed this week in affected buses and bus stops to let passengers know how the route will be affected .

The routes that are affected are:

Citi 1 - will be diverted via Thorpe Road, Longthorpe Parkway, Nene Parkway, Oundle Road and then into Shrewsbury Avenue back on normal route. The stops not served will be Woolworths, Rivergate, and those along Oundle Road before Shrewsbury Avenue.

Citi 3 - will be diverted via Midgate, New Road, Boongate, Frank Perkins Parkway, Whittlesey Road and then onto South Street back onto the normal route. The stops not served will be Woolworths, Rivergate, London Road and Fletton Avenue.

Citi 4 - will be diverted via Padholme Road and Eastfield Road. The stops not served will be Woolworths, Rivergate, Bishops Road and Star Road.

Citi 6 and 7 - diversion as Citi 1 but will continue along Oundle Road and then into New Road to London Road and then back to normal service. The stops not served will be Woolworths, Rivergate and London Road to Park Street.

31/32/33 - diversion via Frank Perkins Parkway, Boongate and then Midgate. The stops not served will be those along Fletton Avenue.

Local Link 407 and Judds 701 - diversion via Oundle Road, Nene Parkway, Longthorpe Parkway and then Thorpe Road. The only stops not served will be Woolworths and Rivergate.

Paul Phillipson, Peterborough City Council's executive director of operations, said: "We have been working with the police to keep disrpution to a minimum in the city on Saturday. However some temporary road closures are necessary and this means that some of our bus routes will be diverted while the closures are in force.

"Posters will be displayed on the buses and the bus stops affected and there will also be posters displayed in Queensgate bus station to inform passengers of the changes. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will re-open the roads as soon as we can."

Buses will return to normal as soon as possible. For more details call the city council's passenger transport team on (01733) 747474.
