13 city firms honoured for green travel initiatives

3 February 2010

Thirteen organisations from across the city were rewarded for their efforts in encouraging staff to use alternative forms of transport to and from work at the fifth annual Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Workplace Travel Plan Awards.

The awards were jointly organised by Peterborough City Council's Travelchoice team and the Cambridgeshire Travel for Work Partnership.

There are six levels in the awards: from step one, in which firms are honoured for showing a commitment to travel planning, through to step six - which recognises organisations that have already achieved a Travel Plan Excellence Award and continue the excellence programme with employees.

The winners were:

Step one: Certificate of Commitment

  • Citizens' Advice Bureau, Peterborough
  • Coca-Cola, Peterborough
  • Fitzwilliam Hospital, Peterborough
  • Kiddicare, Peterborough
  • Peterborough City Council

Step two: Certificate of Development

  • Environment Agency, Peterborough
  • Peterborough Regional College
  • Queensgate Hotel, Peterborough

Step three: Certificate of Implementation

  • Anglian Water, Peterborough
  • Cross Keys Homes, Peterborough

Step four: Cambridge and Peterborough Travel Plan Award

  • Atkins, Peterborough

Step five: Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Travel Plan Excellence Award

  • Peterborough Environment City Trust

Step six: Certificate of Continuing Excellence

  • Norwich and Peterborough Building Society

Travel plans are a package of measures that aim to encourage employees to reconsider how they travel to work. Alternative modes of transport, such as walking, cycling or using public transport and car sharing are promoted, along with e-working and working from home. Business travel is included, with measures such as pool bikes, teleconferencing and videoconferencing being promoted.

Nicola Francis, Peterborough City Council's Travelchoice team manager, said: "The event was a real success with more than 60 delegates attending the ceremony, in the SmartLife Centre in Cambridge. In true Travelchoice spirit all delegates attending from Peterborough were offered a free place on a coach in order to reduce unnecessary car travel.”

Councillor Matthew Lee, Peterborough City Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for environment capital, said: "Travel plans offer benefits to employers and staff alike and I am particularly pleased to see new companies starting to develop travel plans. Reducing the number of cars on the road will also lead to a more effective local economy, so we are looking forward to working with even more businesses in the coming year.

“This initiative is just one of the ways Peterborough is adding to its growing reputation as the UK’s environment capital."
