Five star accolades for two city toilets

08 November 2010

Two Peterborough City Council-managed city centre toilet facilities are flushed with success after being awarded five stars in the national Loo of the Year awards 2010.

The toilets at the Welcome Centre at Car Haven, behind the Town Hall, previously received the top award in 2007 and 2008, and those at the Northminster multi storey car park by Peterborough City Market previously received the five-star award in 2007 and the four-star award in 2008.

The Loo of the Year awards aim to encourage the highest possible standards in all types of away from home or public toilets. Entries are given a grading of between one and five stars based on the results of an unannounced visit by a Loo of the Year inspector.

The toilets are judged on decor and maintenance; signage and communication; cleanliness; provision of fixtures and fittings; hygiene equipment; air quality; security; accessibility; changing facilities and overall management and customer care.

The city council is currently in the process of adapting the Welcome Centre at Car Haven to accommodate a Changing Places facility which further aids disabled people using the city centre.

Councillor Matthew Lee, deputy leader of the city council, said: "It is really important to us that all our public facilities are clean and well-maintained and kept to a standard which people will want to use. These awards demonstrate the hard work and care that goes into keeping our public lavatories in an excellent condition. Well done to everyone involved."

Mike Heath, the city council's commercial services director, said: "Our building design team designed and project-managed the construction of these facilities, our maintenance team repairs them and the building cleaning team ensures that all city council buildings are maintained to the highest standards.

"This is the third time that both toilets have been highly rated by these awards and work will continue to keep these and our other public facilities in a first class condition - delivering a high quality, value for money service to users."

Representatives of the city council's building cleaning team will be presented with the awards at a ceremony on Friday 3 December 2010.
