The planned closure of part of the A15 Paston Parkway this
weekend will not be taking place - as essential works on this
section of the road have already been completed.
Junction 8, where the A1139 Frank Perkins
Parkway meets the A15 Paston Parkway, Peterborough Road and
Parnwell Way, is being improved to reduce congestion and to provide
extra capacity on the city's road network to serve the planned
growth in the east of Peterborough.
It had been planned to close the A15 Paston
Parkway between junction 20 (A47) and junction 8 from 6.30pm on
Friday 3 September 2010 to 5am on Monday 6 September 2010 to allow
the final layers of the road surface to be laid and the road
markings to be completed. This is no longer necessary as this work
was completed during a previous weekend closure.
Councillor Peter Hiller, Peterborough City
Council's cabinet member for housing, neighbourhoods and planning,
said: "The work scheduled for this weekend was just one element of
a large scheme of works to keep traffic flowing in this area.
"Work to improve the road surface and place
the road markings was scheduled to take place over two weekends,
with this being the second. However, all the necessary work was
completed in the first weekend meaning the road will remain open
this weekend."
The end of Parnwell Way near junction 8 will
be closed to traffic from 6.30pm on 10 September to 5am on 13
September 2010 as originally planned.
The A1139 Frank Perkins Parkway will be closed
between junction 7 (Oxney Road) and junction 8 from 6.30pm on 17
September 2010 to 5am on 20 September 2010 and from 6.30pm on 24
September 2010 to 5am on 27 September 2010.
Councillor Hiller added: “Peterborough is a
growing city and we need to make sure that our road networks are
designed to complement this growth, keeping traffic flowing. The
junction 8 project is a major scheme and inevitably this means
there will be disruption while works are ongoing. We do apologise
for any inconvenience caused by these works but would advise
drivers to avoid this area during commuting hours if they can, to
reduce congestion.”
Barry Kirk, the city council's infrastructure
planning and delivery group manager, added: "We anticipate the
majority of carriageway widening activities to be complete by the
end of September, which will make a big difference to the available
space for traffic at junction 8. This will in turn lead to a
considerable improvement in the flow of traffic whilst the
remaining works are completed."
Diversions around the roadworks will be signed
during the road closures, as will the alternative route to
Peterborough Garden Park. Further information on the road
improvement scheme is available at www.jn8.co.uk or www.peterborough.gov.uk
