Residents reminded of Parnwell Way closure this weekend

7 September 2010.

Parnwell Way near junction 8 will be closed to traffic this weekend to allow for the final road surface to be laid and road markings put in place.

Residents are reminded that the closure for these essential works begins at 6.30pm on Friday 10 September. The road will reopen at 5am on Monday 13 September 2010.

The following two weekends will see the closure of the A1139 Frank Perkins Parkway between junction 7 (Oxney Road) and junction 8 to allow for similar essential works to take place. This closure will come into force from 6.30pm on Friday 17 September 2010 to 5am on Monday 20 September 2010 and again from 6.30pm on Friday 24 September 2010 to 5am on Monday 27 September 2010.

Once the series of closures are complete, traffic flow around junction 8 is expected to improve considerably. The junction, where the A1139 Frank Perkins Parkway meets the A15 Paston Parkway, Peterborough Road and Parnwell Way, is being improved to reduce congestion and provide extra capacity on the city's road network to serve the planned growth in the east of Peterborough. Work began in mid April.

Stuart Mounfield, Peterborough City Council's infrastructure delivery team manager, said: "We anticipate all carriageway widening activities to be complete by the end of September, which will make a big difference to the available space for traffic at junction 8. This will in turn lead to a considerable improvement in the flow of traffic whilst the remaining works are completed.

“While we appreciate that the road closures will mean motorists will need to make use of alternative routes over these weekends, we have kept the work to weekends in order to reduce the impact on commuters and businesses.”

Councillor Peter Hiller, cabinet member for housing, neighbourhoods and planning, added: “The junction 8 works are a major scheme and inevitably this means there will be disruption while works are ongoing. However, as we near the completion of the individual phases, I am pleased to report that work is progressing well.”

Diversionary routes around the roadworks will be signed during the road closures. Further information on the road improvement scheme is available at www.jn8.co.uk or www.peterborough.gov.uk.
