Residents can reap the rewards of choosing
sustainable transport options with a range of freebies on offer
during Travelchoice Week from Thursday 16 September 2010 to
Wednesday 22 September 2010.
By leaving the car at home and travelling by
bike, on foot or using public transport, residents will be able to
enjoy a range of free activities during the week, which is run by
Peterborough City Council's Travelchoice team.
These include:
• A day's free travel on Stagecoach buses to
mark Car Free Day on Wednesday 22 September 2010. The voucher for a
free Dayrider can be found in the September/October 2010 issue of
Your Peterborough, which will be dropping through letterboxes from
Monday 6 September 2010.
• A free swim for anyone who cycles or catches
the bus to the regional pool between Thursday 16 September 2010 and
Wednesday 22 September 2010.
• Free bowling for anyone who arrives at AMF
Bowling at Bretton by bus from Thursday 16 September 2010 to
Wednesday 22 September 2010.
• Free adult cycle training from the
Travelchoice team. Ninety minute lessons are available throughout
the week.
• A free breakfast is available for all
cyclists and bus users who stop at the Cornish Pasty Shop on Bridge
Street, Peterborough, between 7.45am and 9am on Thursday 16
September 2010.
• Free entry to Flag Fen for those who walk or
cycle there on Friday 17 September and Saturday 18 September
2010.
• Free bike checks by experienced Bristows
staff outside the Town Hall on Bridge Street from 8am to 10am on
Tuesday 21 September 2010.
There is still time to enter the Travelchoice
sustainable transport photography competition. This is open to
everyone, with the only criteria being that entries must
incorporate a sustainable transport theme - whether this is the fun
of a first bus journey, the picturesque landscape captured on a
country walk, or the joy of a child as they master riding a
bike.
Entries should be emailed to
travelchoice@peterborough.gov.uk by 12noon on Monday 13 September
2010 to be in with a chance. The winning entries will receive
Queensgate gift cards.
Councillor Samantha Dalton, the city council's
cabinet member for environment capital, said: "The Travelchoice
Week activities offer something for every interest and I hope this
will encourage residents to leave their cars at home and try out
more sustainable ways of exploring our city. Cycling, walking and
using the bus are all better for the environment and build upon our
growing national reputation as the UK's environment capital."
Matt Barber, the city council's sustainable
travel officer, said: "There is a great range of incentives on
offer to encourage residents to use more environmentally-friendly
forms of transport during Travelchoice Week. Whether it is using a
different form of transport to make a regular journey, or visiting
somewhere new by bus or bike then we hope that trying it once might
encourage residents to change their travel habits on a more
permanent basis."
