26 January 2012

Pupils at Peterborough’s secondary schools have again achieved record pass rates at GCSE, it emerged today.

The Department for Education has released figures detailing the results of city schools last summer - and how they compared to schools across the country.

The figures show:

  • The number of pupils gaining five or more GCSEs at grades A* to C grades increased to 80.2 per cent - above the national average of 79.3 and up from 72.7 per cent in Peterborough in 2010 and 62.6 per cent in 2009.
  • For pupils gaining five or more GCSEs at grades A* to C, Peterborough is now ranked joint 87th out of 151 authorities - up from 118th in 2010.
  • The number of pupils gaining five more A* to C grades, including English and Maths, increased to 49.4 per cent - up from 45.5 in 2010 and 40.6 in 2009. The national average is 58.9.
  • For pupils gaining five more A* to C grades, including English and Maths, Peterborough is ranked joint 139th out of 151 authorities - up from 142 in 2010.

Jonathan Lewis, Assistant Director of Education and Resources at Peterborough City Council, said: “This is a pleasing set of results. I am delighted that the number of pupils getting five or more GCSEs at A* to C is now above the national average for the first time.

“I would like to congratulate all the pupils and the schools on their achievements.

“But the figures also show we have a significant way to go especially in English and Maths.  Headteachers are aware of the challenge we face moving forward and we are continuing to work closely with schools to ensure the rapid improvement we have seen in recent years goes on.”

Councillor John Holdich, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and University, said: “I would like to praise the young people and teachers across the city who worked so hard to achieve this fine set of results.

“This year’s overall figure for the number of pupils getting five or more GCSEs at A* to C again shows we are heading the right direction.

“I am anxious that the improvement continues into future years - that’s why the city council is continuing to put millions of pounds into our schools.

“There is no doubt there are challenges ahead. The number of young people coming into Peterborough in recent times is well documented, but we have the right plans in place to give every child the very best education.”

The figures from the Department for Education today reveal the number of Peterborough pupils gaining A* to C in English is 59 per cent (National average - 69 per cent).

The number of Peterborough pupils gaining A* to C in Maths is 57.8 per cent (national average - 65.8).

The number of Peterborough pupils gaining A* to C in Science is 72.3 per cent (national average - 76.9).

In this year’s Budget document, the Cabinet has proposed spending £73 million on the continued school improvement programme to give our pupils further chances of success in the future.
