Roadwork improvement schemes to run during summer holidays

20 July 2012.

A number of important roadwork schemes will be taking place during the school summer holidays to keep disruption to motorists to a minimum.

Peterborough City Council will be completing road works in five specific areas from July to September 2012.

Oundle Road bridge (southbound only), which carries the A1260 Nene parkway over Oundle Road, is to undergo improvement works to prolong the life of the bridge.

These works are programmed to start on Friday 28 July 2012 and will last for approximately six weeks. During the works there will be the need to have:

  • Overnight full closures of the A1260 southbound, to set up and change over traffic management (from the Oundle Rd off-slip to junction 31 (Morley Way)
  • 24hour lane closures in either the nearside or offside lane from junction 33 (Longthorpe parkway) to junction 31 (Morley Way)
  • Closure of the slip road off the parkway to Oundle Road when the offside lane is closed to prevent traffic from queuing back onto the single lane of the parkway.

Diversion routes will be via junction 31 (Morley Way, Shrewsbury Avenue and Oundle Road) when required.

London Road railway bridge, which carries the A15 London Road over the railway line adjacent to Phorpres House, is to undergo improvement works during the school holidays which will last for approximately three weeks. During these works the following measures will be put in place:

  • Traffic will be reduced to a single lane over the bridge, controlled by manually operated traffic lights for the duration of the works.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained.

On Monday 23 July 2012, Hallfields Lane bridge, which carries Hallfields Lane over Paston Brook watercourse, is to undergo improvement works which will last for approximately six weeks. It will be necessary to take the following measures:

  • Traffic will be reduced to a single lane over the bridge, controlled by traffic lights for the duration of the works
  • The bridge will be fully closed for a week in the middle of the programme, approximately w/c 13 August.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained for the majority of the time.

The diversion route will be via Fulbridge Road, Gunthorpe Road, Pennine Way and vice versa.

Councillor Peter Hiller, Cabinet Member for Housing, Neighbourhoods and Planning for Peterborough City Council, said: “The improvement works set to take place over the next few weeks will make a huge difference for drivers across the city. From reconstructing surfacing to installing safety barriers, the end product will be well worth the short term interruptions.

“These works have been scheduled to coincide with the schools summer holidays, when traffic flows are greatly reduced, to keep disruption to a minimum. We do apologise for any inconvenience these works may cause motorists but as a growing city we have to make sure that our roads are up to standard now and in the future.”
